Course Overview

The purpose of this unit is to enable learners to develop an understanding of modern CAM and CNC machining systems, the importance of information links between CAD product data and manufacturing data, the role of process planning in manufacturing and the types of process planning available. This programme covers CNC machining using CAM technologies in areas such as 2.5D Milling including trochoidal milling, 3D roughing, 3D surface machining, 5-axis milling turning and mill/turn.

What are the entry requirements?

  • Knowledge and use of 3D solid-modelling packages such as Solidworks or Inventor.
  • Experience in the use of CNC machining programming.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE: Applicants who do not have English as their first language must ensure they satisfy English Language requirements. For entry to undergraduate courses, a minimum score of 5.5 in an IELTS exam is required. For postgraduate courses, a minimum of 6.0 is required. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure their English proficiency meets these requirements.

Modules Outline

  • At the end of this module the learner will understand:

    • The use of automation in modern machining systems.
    • The information links between Computer Aided Machining and manufacturing systems.
    • Process planning for manufacture.
    • How to produce CNC part-programs and transfer to the CNC controller.
    • How to produce parts using CAD CAM software and CNC milling and turning machine.

  • Tuesday evenings from 7.00pm to 10.00pm.

  • A transcript of the result achieved will be issued by the awarding body City and Guilds (City & Guilds Award 9209-433).

  • €1,000 payable directly to TUS upon registration. Additional City and Guilds Assessment fees and registration fee will also apply. These fees will be collected by the exams office during the course of the programme.
