Course Overview

The primary aim of the Higher Diploma in Arts in Accounting is to facilitate graduates from non-accounting programs who wish to pursue a career in accounting. The aim of this one-year program is to give business, arts, science and other graduates, exemptions from the professional accountancy and taxation examinations.

What are the entry requirements?

Students are expected to have a minimum of a 2.2 Honours Bachelor Degree (Level 8) in a non-finance and accounting or a non-cognate discipline or approved equivalent qualification.

Or

A level 7 qualification in a non-finance and accounting or a non-cognate discipline and at least 1 year relevant professional

Non-EU nationals must provide evidence of ability to follow classes in English (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent). Applicants may be required to attend TUS for an interview. Zoom interviews may be arranged for international students.

Course Modules

  • Cost Accounting and Decision Making

    Credits: 15

    This module aims to build on the skills learned in Management Accounting I. After completion of the module, the student should have an understanding of specialist cost accounting techniques and be able to provide management with the information needed for decision-making. The student will also be aware of the risks and uncertainty involved in decision-making. The student will gain a more in depth knowledge of budgeting and management control systems, responsibility accounting and various performance measurement systems.

  • Personal and Business Tax

    Credits: 15

    This module aims to develop knowledge and skills in areas of personal taxation and develop an appreciation of the operation of the Irish Tax system. It will also give students an understanding of stamp duty, local property tax, USC, subcontractors and professional services withholding tax.

  • Audit Planning and Implementation

    Credits: 15

    This module introduces students to the role of the external audit and its regulatory and ethical framework. It covers the planning and design of audit procedures to test accounting and internal control systems. It covers audit techniques, preparation of audit reports using appropriate wording and provides the student with the knowledge of auditor liability and of additional reporting requirements imposed by Companies legislation.

  • Transaction Tax Applications

    Credits: 15

    This module develops knowledge and skills in areas of capital gains tax and value added tax. It will also provide students with a knowledge of the Irish Corporation Tax System.

  • Secondary School Teaching (subject to the pursuit a Professional Master of Education (PME) degree programme)
  • Leading employers include Deloitte, EY, PwC, Grant-Thornton, BDO, Mazars, BOI and Northern Trust”

Those who complete the Certificate in Personal and Transaction Taxation will be eligible to apply for an exemption from Professional Accountancy Examinations and may also apply to enter the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Accounting under TUS’s transfer and progression policies.
