Course Overview

This proposed programme aims to equip experienced social care workers with the knowledge, skills and insight required to be effective managers in social care settings. The intention is to offer the learner an opportunity to examine the practice of leadership and management in social care services, informed by an analysis of wider management theory, in order to develop appropriate management competencies.

What are the entry requirements?

A primary honours degree in Social Care, or equivalent degree in a cognate discipline, with a minimum award of Second-Class Honours Grade 2.2

OR

An appropriate professional qualification in a cognate discipline AND at least 2 years relevant professional experience/responsibility

OR

A primary honours degree AND at least 3 years relevant professional responsibility and experience

An interview may form part of the selection process.

The number of enrolments to this part-time programme is restricted to 25 students.

Students must be in employment or have previously worked in a social care setting. Students should ideally have the support of an agency to fulfil the academic and practical requirements of the course.

NB: Successful completion of this programme of study will not confer entitlement to register as a Social Care Worker.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE: Applicants who do not have English as their first language must ensure they satisfy English Language requirements. For entry to undergraduate courses, a minimum score of 5.5 in an IELTS exam is required. For postgraduate courses, a minimum of 6.0 is required. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure their English proficiency meets these requirements.

  • Part-time – In Class at TUS, Moylish Campus (Limerick) (Year 1 2023-2024)

    The programme will be delivered part-time face-to-face at TUS, Moylish Campus (Limerick) over 2 academic years, 1 day per week (Fridays from 9am to 5pm, inclusive of breaks) over 4 semesters. Class contact hours will normally be 7 hours per week.

    Start Date

    Friday 15th September, 2023 – 2 hour introduction from 10am to 12pm

    Friday Sept 22nd, 2023 – full classes start from 9am to 5pm

  • Each 5 credits will normally equate to approximately 100 Total Learning Hours. Total Learning Hours includes the time you spend in class (lectures, tutorials, practical elements) and the time you spend completing work outside of college.  The balance between these two varies by discipline, and by level of study. You should bear in mind that the workload will increase at particular times e.g. when assignments are due.

  • The vast majority of the course is assessed through continual assessment for all elements of each module. Some modules will have a scheduled final exam which will take place online.

  • Master of Arts in Social Care Management (Level 9, 90 ECTS)

  • The overall fee for this two year programme is €10,800. The fee for Year 1 is €5,400.

  • What days will I need to attend classes?

    Classes are run on Fridays from 9am – 5pm at TUS Moylish Campus.

    How will I access course materials / readings and lectures?

    Lectures and readings will be provided on ‘Moodle’ – TUS’s online learning system.

    In addition to classes, is there a final project?

    Yes, all students must complete a Master’s Dissertation on a topic of their choosing which relates to Social Care Management.  There is time reserved in the schedule for completing the final dissertation in the final year of the Masters.  Every student will be assigned a project supervisor drawn from the teaching staff on the course.
