TUS Promoting Consent and Ending Sexual Violence Sub Committee
TUS is committed to fostering a safe, respectful and supportive institutional campus culture. We are actively working to implement the Framework for Consent in HEIs: Safe, Respectful, Supportive and Positive: Ending Sexual Harassment in Irish Higher Education Institutions and learning from the recommendations in THEA’s Promoting Consent and Preventing Sexual Violence Report
In addition to the information on this site, TUS staff and students are encouraged to visit the TUS Ending Sexual Violence Moodle Page for further information and support.
The TUS Promoting Consent & Ending Sexual Violence Sub-Committee oversees the implementation of the Framework for Consent in HEIs; Safe, Respectful, Supportive and Positive: Ending Sexual Harassment in Irish Higher Education Institutions at TUS. A TUS wide Action Plan has been developed and implementation of this is now underway.
ESVH Allies
An ESVH Ally in TUS is someone who has completed the Galway Rape Crisis Centre Sexual Violence Disclosure Training on receiving disclosures relating to sexual violence and harassment and who is an initial contact for students or staff. Their role is to listen in a non-judgemental manner and signpost to relevant support services. If you have been affected by sexual violence or harassment, please scan the QR code to find the list of ESVH Allies on our campuses:
Active Consent Classes and Workshops
In partnership with NUIG Active*Consent we run Active*Consent online classes. As part of TUS’ induction schedule, all first year students are invited to take part in these classes. Active Consent online classes will be made available for all students and staff. These online sessions will take 30 minutes and will not require any sharing of personal information.
NUIG Active Consent E-Learning Module, Sexual Violence and Harassment: How to Support Yourself and Your Peers
Upon completion of NUIG’s Active*Consent workshop, students and staff are also advised to take the NUIG Active*Consent E-Learning Module, Sexual Violence and Harassment: How to Support Yourself and Your Peers. This module builds on topics explored in the Active*Consent online workshop to introduce a more nuanced understanding of sexual violence, harassment and support services available to students who have had negative sexual experiences. This is a 45 minute self-guided eLearning module and provides viewers with introductory skills in supporting anyone who discloses negative experiences and how to safely call out and intervene in developing negative situations in their peer group and community.
Who is this eLearning module for?
All students and staff who have done the Active* Consent online workshop. You can access the course on the TUS ESVH Moodle Page in the Bystander Skills tab
Speak Out
Speak Out is an online anonymous reporting tool available to students and staff to disclose incidents of bullying, cyberbullying, harassment, discrimination, hate crime, coercive behaviour/ control, stalking, assault, sexual harassment, sexual assault, and rape.
The information you provide using this tool is valuable as the data collated will help inform TUS’ activities aimed at addressing bullying, harassment and sexual misconduct.
It is important to remember that as the Speak Out reporting tool is completely anonymous, there is no way of identifying or contacting any member of the university community who uses the tool.
The tool will help you to find information and contact details of relevant TUS supports and specialist external supports.
Please report one incident, or series of related incidents at a time. This is to ensure that we can understand the nature of your experience.
Staff Awareness
It is important that staff in TUS are aware of key definitions in relation to consent, sexual violence and harassment as well as their role in supporting disclosures. The Promoting Consent and Ending Sexual Violence Sub-Committee are developing a training plan for staff. In the interim, the following video developed by Active Consent provides an important information in relation to concepts, statistics and basic language to support students or colleagues who disclose sexual violence to them.
